introduced. Kanoryu jujutsu was taught in secret, away from the prying eyes of the West, at a time when Japan was building a powerful Imperial Army and Naval Force. Nevertheless, this book is a rare and important work in the history of the system. Hancock states on page 4 of his introduction: “The Kano systems, at the time of its adoption by the Japanese Government, consisted of forty-seven tricks of combat and fifteen “serious tricks”. Additions and amplifications have been made by those two great teachers, Hoshino and Tsutsumi, until now the complete system, as we teach it, comprises one hundred and sixty tricks.” The text also includes lethal atemi and kuatsu restoration methods. |
