Title: THE COMPLETE KANO JIU-JITSU Author: Irving Hancock and Higashi Katsukuma Publisher: G.P. Putnam’s Sons – The Knickerbocker Press Year: 1905 Pages: ISBN number Cost (value):. Availability: |
|
In 1905, the Kano system was in its infancy despite the suggestion that the contents of this book represent the ’complete’ Kano jujutsu. Major developments to the system occurred in Japan during the three decades following its publication. By the time Japan occupied China in 1932, specialised military applications and training methods had been refined and introduced. Kanoryu jujutsu was taught in secret, away from the prying eyes of the West, at a time when Japan was building a powerful Imperial Army and Naval Force. Nevertheless, this book is a rare and important work in the history of the system.
Hancock states on page 4 of his introduction: “The Kano systems, at the time of its adoption by the Japanese Government, consisted of forty-seven tricks of combat and fifteen “serious tricks”. Additions and amplifications have been made by those two great teachers, Hoshino and Tsutsumi, until now the complete system, as we teach it, comprises one hundred and sixty tricks.” The text also includes lethal atemi and kuatsu restoration methods. |
